Dos and Don'ts of Washing Your Swimwear

These costly tiny pieces of essential summer equipment need special care and attention to last many seasons! You may be damaging your favorite bikini without even knowing it! The way you care for these items can affect their fit and color. TRUSTTT...I have learned the hard way. Here are some simple DO's and DON'Ts for caring for your swimwear.

DON’T! -  Throw into the washing machine
This is not like every other garment in your closet, so don’t treat it like it is.  Doing so will damage the elasticity and color of your suit.

DO! – Handwash
Soak in cool water & diluted handsoap/gentle shampoo. Squeeze and release.  Rinse until water runs clear.

DON’T! -  Wring out
Never twist your suit to wring out!  This will damage the elasticity and shape.

DO! – Squeeze dry
Instead squeeze the suit with your hands to get rid of the excess water.

DON’T! -  Use laundry detergent
This is too harsh for the nature of your suit.  Over time you will find your suit getting stiff and crunchy.

DO! – Use hand soap/gentle shampoo
You can also use a detergent specific to swimsuits.  These provide enough power to remove dirt and residue without damaging the material.

DON’T! -  Leave in direct sunlight
Do not leave your suit to dry in the sun.  You will end up with a pastel version of your suit.

DO! – Line dry indoors
Hang dry away from UV rays to keep original colors vibrant.

DON’T! -  Store damp
Never store your swimsuits wet! Especially with other dry items. You are creating an environment ideal for mold and bacteria to grow.

DO! – Use a "wet bag"
If you are stuck and have to pack up before your suit fully dries, keep it in a “wet bikini bag,” or even a plastic bag, then rise and hang immediately after getting home.

Your poolside and beach bummin' ootd's will be looking stunning for the rest of the summer and summers yet to come!
