This
September marks the 10 year anniversary since I walked onto my university campus for the first
time as a first year. Wow. Life is passing me by!! This was a time of HUGE change for me. It was the first time I was truly on my
own. I didn’t know a single soul. It was incredibly frightening and yet equally
as exciting. Luckily, I was already confident and secured with myself. I knew who I was and who I wanted to be. But there are still some things I would reiterate/tell my freshman self.
1. Learn how to focus – With so many distractions
around you, you need to learn to filter them out. Remember why you are here. You are first and foremost a STUDENT.
2. The list of your high school amigos will get leaner – You will lose contact with a lot of friends…and I mean A LOT. That’s okay. It’s natural, people grow and change as they
come into their own. Don’t take it
personally. Focus on the ones that keep
in touch, the ones who exert just as much effort as you to maintain the friendship.
3. You will make lots of mistakes – Experience is the greatest teacher. Learn and move on. But never be ashamed. These are the things that will transform you into a warrior!
4. Never give away your power – You are the only person that can control your thoughts and actions. Whatever you want to be and however you want to think and feel, you CAN. Don’t let ANYONE tell you otherwise!
5. Focus on yourself – This is THE time to learn more about yourself. From birth until now, you have been changing so much, so rapidly and constantly discovering new things that it’s hard to figure yourself out. This is the time to take a real good look and understand yourself.
6. Find a way to use your talents & skills – Find an outlet to do what you are good at. Look hard. There are TONS of opportunities waiting for you.
7. You are not invincible – Sleep more.
8. Get a new wardrobe – 4 years of sporting uniforms got you running out of options…real quick.
9. Make friends in class – It's okay to mix business with pleasure!
10. Get fit, girl! – DON’T wait until your last year to get fit! You hate the gym, so better get on that Insanity workout! The struggle is real!
11. Keep on not giving a damn! – Do you! Do what makes you happy. Do what’s best for you! As long as you don’t encroach on other people’s business, you’re good!
12. Don't eat the cafeteria rice – You will just be offended that they pass that sh*t off as rice. Yes, you will make people laugh and reaffirm those Asian stereotypes, but you NEED your rice cooker for survival.
13. Don't lose yourself – Keep up with what’s important to you. Go to church. Call your family. Cut out dead weight. Take whatever makes you grow positively and let go of what’s holding you back.
14. Manage your procrastination – Telling you NOT to procrastinate is an unattainable dream. Learn how to manage it by picking which things to procrastinate on. Never EVER procrastinate on everything at the same time!
15. Learn how to say no – I know you have FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) but at some point you HAVE to say NO to get your shit DONE.
16. Get better at time management – This requires discipline which is hard to acquire. Be realistic, find a routine that works for you and STICK TO IT!
17. Join a club – You will find some of your best friends (of all time) here. LOVE & PRIDE.
18. Buy some leggings – They will save your life. And a couple of those fleece lined ones. You will thank me.
19. Don't doubt yourself – You have the skills to succeed from here. You have to BELIEVE Mom did a good job raising you. You are capable of making good choices. ALWAYS listen to your gut.
20. Ask for help - Just because you are on your own, doesn't mean you have to make it alone. Whether it be academically, emotionally, socially...harness all of your courage and ask for help when you need it!
